Function of Calibration

Deriving Beat-Resolved Pressure Profiles and Visualizing Pulse Irregularities from Conventional Oscillometric Cuff Measurements: A Proof-of-Concept Study with Invasive Reference Recordings

Martin Deutges, Henrik Schneider, Holger Redtel

Pilot study of a signal-processing method (cNIAPP) that derives a beat-resolved pressure profile from the pressure curve of an ordinary oscillometric upper-arm cuff measurement, making pressure fluctuations and pulse irregularities visible. It was compared with invasively measured aortic pressure (16 recordings from 11 people): the pulse intervals agreed closely, but the absolute accuracy of the beat-resolved upper-arm values explicitly cannot be assessed from this.

Foundations of Calibration

Autonomous Calibration of Blood Pressure Dependent Data Using Second-Order Blood Pressure Variation for a Future Mobile Diagnostic: Requirements for a Calibration

Martin Deutges, Holger Redtel

The paper shows why classical oscillometric cuff measurement is not accurate enough to calibrate devices that measure continuously: its systematic error is of the same order as the second-order blood pressure variation. From that same variation it derives the requirements for a burden-free, autonomous calibration.
